No, the sleep button does not usually weaken over time. I have an iPhone 4 that I purchased in 2010 which still works well. I recently replaced it with an iPhone 5. If you do not have Apple Care, the repair is bound to cost a significant amount of money. Apple will know if you have Apple Care.
