Putting the price difference aside for a moment, what would you folks
recommend for bar code scanning? An app like Digit-eyes, or a
dedicated device like the ID Mate Quest?

One thing to note is that Digit-Eyes works very well if you use it correctly,
but a barcode scanner will always be quite a lot faster. So, if you don't want
to take up to a minute or three to get an item identified, then go for the
Quest.
If you go with Digit-Eyes, remember to place the camera
