I had written Apple to get clarification about the cleaning products mentioned 
on their own article.
Here is their reply, which I will take as the authoritative position and modify 
my opinion accordingly.

Thank you for your email. The wipes mentioned at the beginning of the article 
are specifically for 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting 
Wipes. The warning of "Don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, 
compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, or abrasives to clean your 
iPhone.” covers other cleaning agents that would go beyond the prescribed items 
at the top of the article.
