I have followed your instructions several times and

Hi Dan,
You don't "download" but "add" music to the iTunes library. It doesn't
matter where your music is, but keep in mind that once you
f times until
you get to the "Apply" button or you can go to the File menu, press "v" for
Devices and select "Sync".

looked at Itunes but do not see an option to search the hard drive for
music.
