It only goes into pairing mode when you press the pairing button, surely?
I just plug mine in with a stub lead and it works.

I am just guessing here, but perhaps if you had the patch cord plugged in
before you turned it on, it would not go into pairing mode. I have never tried
to use a device such as this that wasn't already paired to something.
