Anna is right that it was a big and contentious topic on the list a couple of
years ago. It should still be in the archives.

Pressing the wake/sleep button also known as the lock button will do a soft
reset. That will not harm the device.

Hi all. I need your help with something. When I tell people on another group
that pressing the power button 6 times can damage data in the iPhone, they all
scoff and shrug it off. Can someone point me to an article that explains this
to back what I'm saying up? Thanks.

Pressing the wake/sleep button also known as the lock button five times with
the phone awake will do a soft reset. Doing a soft reset will not harm the
device.

Ok, I'm confused. Didn't a member on this list say that pressing the power
button 5 or 6 times damages data on the phone? Whoever said that, please chime
in here.

I have never heard of this being an issue. I also don't remember
reading this on the list.

Oh good! I heard the same thing on the list. Some said it was like crashing the
iOS bring board. Glad I wasn't having auditory hallucinations. Thanks for
validating me. I was afraid to say I had heard it since I had no proof at all
that they set it.

Considering there’s a bug in iOS right now where notifications can refuse to
clear from notification center, pressing the sleep/wake button 6 times quickly
is a faster way to resolve this than a complete reset.
