Depends. It could be the iPhone 3G or it could be the third generation network
such as AT&T and others use etc.

cities providers now offer 4G or LTE which is yet again much faster than 3G.

That's not true. If you disable 3G, you will use mobile data on the slower
GPRS/EDGE network, and you will not be able to use Visual VoiceMail, only
available on O2.
