I think he's talking about monitoring your current location using the
tracking option, rather than turn-by-turn directions. That should work
on the iPhone 4 as it uses VoiceOver to speak the information, yes?

Hi,
Mostly, flicking to the current location works for me. Sometimes while I'm
walking, Maps will stop reporting it for a bit, but then it starts up again. Be
sure either Tracking or Tracking with Headings is on.
I imagine the announcements will only happen if the screen is unlocked, so try
