The exact steps to remove the recents from your app switcher. 1. Open up Settings 2. Double tap on Mail, Contacts, and Calender 3. Swipe right until you get to the Contacts section or use the navigate by headings to get there 4. You will hear an option "Show in app switcher"; double tap on it. 5. You will have an option to turn off Phone Favorites and Recents
I am turning both off to see if I can detect any battery life improvement.
