Sorry.

Ha! I forgot about that option. I think it does come with the OS. I just
took a look at it. On my system there is the Apple dictionary and the American
Oxford English Dictionary available. I don't remember if both were available
by default, or if I had to download one of them.

Hi,
So long as I can use the edit function, I make use of the onboard
dictionary, it is very good and VO friendly. I also have an Italian dictionary
option, also good! I think I am remembering aright, this came with the ios and
didn't cost anything extra.

That's a shame. The one in the K1000 cd is very much like it and, as I say,
it's the one on the Kindle, at least my wife's. It's actually enjoyable
reading if your mind runs that way.

Mary,
The interesting thing about the Concise Oxford dictionary is that you can
manage to get the definition. Once you have typed in a word the definition is
displayed on the screen. Fine for sighted people, not so good for VoiceOver
users as I said. However, there is a more button. If
Hi David,
Well, I think I rather pay more for it fully accessible dictionary then do that
nonsense that you have to go through with the oxford concise. Perhaps some
emails to the developers will result in a voiceover friendly change for a new
version. Maybe get the folks at Apple is interested.

I've not found anything.

Richard, your points are ones we should all keep in mind. Over the last
20 years, access to information of all kinds has become easier and a lot
cheaper, not to mention the volume of information has gone up
tremendously.
During the KNFB Reader launch, when people were proclaiming $100 to be
To put it another way... you now
have a dictionary, probably a full library, in your pocket. fifteen or
twenty years ago you'd be scanning print versions of a lot of that, or
fast-forwarding through endless cassette tapes, or looking for something
in volume 13 of a Braille version, etc. Ok,
If it were possible I'd try to get the Oxford Concise. It's the one
available for the Kindle, and a variant of it is the Oxford you can get from
Kurzweil.
Just my $.02.

I hope that little try out didn't set you back too much money, David. Isn't it
frustrating when you know they could make something accessible, and they just
don't, and they are not a one-man or one woman development shop.

Good information. If you opt for this paid version, just be sure to get AHD5.
Again, I understand the app maker took steps to make this version accessible.

To find the dictioniary app by Farlex, go to the search box in the apps store
on your iDevice and type dictionary followed by a space followed by Farlex. It

Remember that when you start typing in the search box, the list that
comes up is a suggestion of search terms. To actually perform the

Until you can find an app you like, why not just use google? If I wanted to
define the word definition, for example, I would type
define:definition, and it would give me its definition. Note the placement of
the colon in the above example. It uses several dictionaries for its sources.
That’s exactly what I do.

I just read the description in the app store. It looks impressive at $24.99.
One question, in the description it talks about interlinking of words, or
something like that. Does it read well with VoiceOver, or does it say link
after most of the words?
Thanks,

I like the American Heritage Dictionary app. AHD5 is nicely accessible. It’s

It seems simple to use and VO friendly. I think it is free but I got it last
