Blind Square is excellent for this. I like Ariadne because it tells you how
fast you are going and the direction when the monitoring feature is toggled
on. The thing to note here is that different GPS apps do different things
well.

Try Apple Maps. Find the tracking button ANd double tap it until it becomes
tracking on with headings.

Blind square should do this too, just not as well as ariadne in this area.
The upcoming Breadcrumb app from LookTel is suppose to do this also.
