I just think it’s just too expensive.

I don't think you have to be an AT&T customer. The Mifi is from AT&T but AIra

Your cell provider does not matter, and they have two choices for mifi, A T and
T and Verizon. All cost is included in your monthly subscription. So you have
no equipment cost, no data charges, nothing else.
