Actually, there is no need to set typing to standard. I do this all the time
since I add all my phone numbers using the international format with + followed
by the country code. All you do is tap on the Shift key

When ever you are in any kind of document on your phone, you go to more
symbols, when you go to more numbers, your go to more symbols, it'll be towards
the bottom of the screen, I can't remember exactly where, but when you click on
more symbols, by double tapping, depending on your typing method
