I also have a 4S running the latest ios and I have seen this iPhone
field before. I can't say when exactly it shows up as iPhone or just
mobile though it seems to be present on some of my older contacts, the
ones I added before I really knew what I was doing.

If I click on the mobile button to go through the additional labels iPhone
is the first one in the list for me. First mobile is selected and then the
first one after that is iPhone.

Well, I guess you have something on your iPhones which I don't have because

since Google doesn't support that. In the past for me it used to get
