Yes to the second, as iCloud mail is standard IMAP and so works with any

I stand corrected. Apparently
The instructions on how to change the Apple ID are fairly easy. Just visit the
website and you will see. I did this recently on one of my clients iPhone.

I stand corrected. Apparently, you can log into an Apple account with other
email addresses, as long as you set them up. You can manage this at
appleid.apple.com

I don't think it's possible to change your Apple ID. I'm pretty sure you have
to create a new one to use a different address.

That's just it, though, I want to get rid of this Gmail completely. When I sign
into Apple, I want to use my Apple address, not Gmail, but it won't let me
change my username to said iCloud address.

Hi, Alex,
Your Apple ID doesn't have to be used for your iCloud address. Just use your
iCloud address, assuming you have one already. If you don't you'll be prompted
to set one up. I use a gmail address for my Apple ID, but it doesn't come into
play at all in iCloud mail except as a sign-in ID.

Hi,
Yes to both questions. It's fine to use an iCloud address as your Apple ID, and
the iCloud email address is for a standard IMAP email account.

Anna
