Why not just turn on Airplane Mode and turn the volume down a bit so in case
you accidently press the side button and the phone speaks the time it's not so
others can hear it.

Yeah I don’t blame you. I tend to mute my phone, turn off the speech and turn
on screen curtain on my phone. I just find I have the best privacy that way.

I do that too, but the three-finger double-tap turns off Speech, not VoiceOver.

appearing on the lock screen.
That’s probably the safer option other than turn vo off or down in those
situations.
