Before I received my StandScan Pro, I did my scanning with Prizmo. I usually successfully scanned a page in one to three attempts, and most of the time it was in one attempt. That said, it took a bit of time per page thanks to the required preciseness.
Once I figured out how to set up the ScanStand Pro, the first time took me about half an hour as I did not have sighted assistance), I decided to try using Text Grabber. Prizmo and Text Grabber both use the latest version of ABBYY's Fine Reader for Mobile. Text Grabber is an ABBYY product. The OCR from both apps is fairly equivalent. Prizmo allows for some skew of the text. Text Grabber requires the text to be perfectly aligned. Prizmo requires the user to accept each image in case you don't like the image or you want to crop out parts of the image and only recognise certain areas (features only for sighted users). In other words, Prizmo is really the only product when scanning by hand without using a stand. That said, Text Grabber, when aligned properly on top of the StandScan Pro, is the easiest mobile scanning experience, and is just about equivalent to OCR with my computer using a camera. The process is, make sure the lights in the StandScan Pro have power. Make sure the iPhone is perfectly square to the box. Make sure the camera is over the hole. I use my finger tip under the hole to feel where the camera lens is). Make sure the page is flush against the back wall of the box. Double or split tap the take picture button (barely touch the display. As I have stated multiple times, you never need to use more than slight touch pressure on the iPhone). After the shutter sound, wait a couple seconds for processing. When VO speaks, the image has been recognised. If you want to save the text, options are available. It really is an easy process. And, the speed with my iPhone 5 is incredible at just a few seconds per page. Of course, it is a portable solution. There is no batch scanning options.
