I suggest a 4-finger single tap, just below the top of the iPhone’s screen.
This will place focus at the top left corner of the app’s screen, just below
the status bar. In the Message app, this places focus on the Edit button.
Then you can begin navigating the app, using the left-to-right

Double-tap the status bar. That pretty much always takes you to the top of any
list you are in.
