The Emoji icons are not composed of punctuation symbols as the older style
emoticons were.
Emoji are actual little pictures which appear in your messages.

Just a FYI for those wanting to use emoticons, the IMG keyboard on the iDevices
also has a "recently used" selection, so a person has quick access to
frequently used emoticons. This makes things a lot easier than having to swipe
through many pages and different categories to find
