Sounds like you double tapped on the Purchased button. Does the header
on that page say "Purchased"? Do you have a button in the top left
corner that says "Updates, back button". If so,
an update button by each
app that must mean it has been updated. Is that correct?

Ed the device should update all apps in the background if you set it
that way. If not go to the App Store double tap on updates tab and
either double tap on update button next to each app or update all button
to well update all apps listed.

and I can’t find a way to cancil the update and start again so is there a way
to get the update to reinstall?
