Re: Identifying barcodes

2021-01-21 Thread Arlene
That gives me more understanding, Donna, thank you, that was something I
didn't know. It's just after all this time, and it seems so tremendous being
able to read cooking directions with the bar codes which is really great, I
started thinking how something was so missing, and that was the experation
dates. Thanks again.

Also expiration dates are stamped on products not printed. There is times in
which the ink smears, the writing has faded. Until it is mandated that
expiration dates be placed on an item, on the same spot for all products & a
better expiration date is adopted, there is no way for a blind person to be
able to read the expiration dates on products.

Sadly, I do not think you will ever see expiration dates in barcones.
Barcodes identify the general product, not that individual package. But
you would probably have to contact the manufacturer to find out if
something could be done. According to my wife, there is little consistancy
of placement of expiration dates and it is hard for even sighted people to
find them.

Richard, I've heard from my sister and sighted friends that the print is
really tiny for the experation dates. While I wouldn't mind writing to the
different companies that do ocr, whether it be apps or computer ocr, maybe
I'm asking a question that doesn't make sense in a way, actually I don't
know how to put my questioning, sorry about that, but is there some
technical reason that you know of that the experation dates don't come up
in the scanning? I mean experation dates are just as important as cooking
directions on a box, well in the samecatagory of importantance. Sorry if I'm
not making sense. I do want to think you for giving it a try as far as
seeing if you could get the experation date, I think that may have been
about 2 or 3 weeks or so when it last came up.

Hi all,
I also wanted to elaborate on Supersense a bit. We're working on adding cooking
directions, since that is a crucial set of information that can be obtained
with a little cross-research after identifying a barcode.
I've also noticed that from my personal experience, Supersense tends to
recognize more products in my pantry than the other apps I've tried.

Boxes are usually on the bottom.
Plastic bags are usually near the seam, toward the bottom.
Cans and bottles without labels, you just have to keep turning the container

Boxes are usually on the bottom.
Plastic bags are usually near the seam, toward the bottom.

RE: Identifying barcodes

2021-01-19 Thread Richard Turner
I’ve only just started using Supersense, so had not noticed the lack of extra
info.
IN Seeing AI, there is a More Info button in the upper right if more details
are available.
In the case of Lean Cuisine frozen meals, the cooking direction is included in
that more info.

>From what I read on the Envision America web site, they will be supporting the

>them, I wouldn’t stop using it until the database is so out of date that it is

>database is on the memory card.
Apps like Seeing AI depend on an internet connection to look things up I think,
so the ID Mate will be as good as the latest database installed.

Hi,

If that information is available, yes. You double tap on the result once
your bar code has been identified and all the info about that product
will show up. Most of the time, you do get cooking directions.

If I have a can of soup for example, I just call up a volunteer on be
my eyes, and I just ask them what soup I have, and they use my iPhones

Re: Identifying barcodes

2021-01-18 Thread Richard Turner
Seeing AI does a very good job. As does SuperSense.
The rule of thumb that I learned from Digit-Eyes' page on scanning bar codes is
that on cans or bottles with a label, the code is usually near the seam on the
lower half of the container.
Boxes are usually on the bottom.
Plastic bags are usually near the seam, toward the bottom.
Cans and bottles without labels, you just have to keep turning the container
until you find it.

Richard

"You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon
airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep
space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was
young."
"Why, what did she tell you?"
"I don't know, I didn't listen."
