My local try with curl using rest returns 400 error if query is bad:
$ curl -i "http://demo.openlinksw.com/sparql?query=bad_qry";
HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request

I see a problem in the Sparql endpoint ... if there is an error in the
query string, it doesnt return any HTTP 4xx error. Rather, it returns
a non Sparql Results XML response.
Do you have the same result there ?
