Can I suggest that RealVNC include a question on this in their support
FAQ? Something like:
Q: I can't connect to my other computer using VNC. I have a router
(Linksys, D-Link, etc.)
A: (gleaned from the best responses to this question, which is easily
the most frequent one I've seen)

1) Find out your PC's (the one you want to VNC into) MAC address.
2) Login to your router.
3) Configure your router to always give the same internal ip (192.168.x.y) to the PC.
4) Configure your router to forward traffic into port 12345 (whatever number you
choose) to the IP you configured in (3).
VNC is not Citrix/Terminal Services. VNC accesses the framebuffer that is actually
displayed to the user. It has no real multiuser capabilities.

The eventlog is a windows thing, not a VNC thing, but the VNC server
will write to it. Start->Run->eventvwr.

Try using Hextile colour encoding. Check your eventlog on the server PC
and see if you see any application errors like "ZRLE encoding, not
enough space".

Run vncconfig -nowin (or -iconic, whatever you'd prefer). See the
vncconfig man page.

While browsing the archives looking for solutions, I've seen a couple of
threads that boil down to a space allocation problem when using ZRLE for
colour encoding.
One such thread:
