running the vnc4 client and server on Debian 3.1 (testing). Lost my
session
a couple of times by the local xscreensaver kicking in. Was running the
client fullscreen.
Couldn't stop the screensaver the normal way because it didn't listen to the
keyboard;
killed the screensaver from
You need to start a display-manager on your :1 display, ie.
something like gdm, kdm etc. You do this by putting one in
your Xvnc start script.

TCP vs. UDP? Thus is the port you forward set up as
a TCP port or maybe as a UDP port?
Would swap your modem for something else, e.g. rule
out the modem (or not ;-) ) as the source of the problem.
