Do you mean the "actual" display on the system console, or just another copy of the desktop software?

There is another vnc "like" tool, x11vnc, which uses the vnc client, but a different server tool, to show the "actual" X display of the system console. It is a bit slower, but does work. I have used it on a Solaris 7 system to watch the actual "console" screen.
