On this day in 1995 it was discovered that the star, Pegasi 51, has the first known extrasolar planet. About 15 years later, Gliese 581, 20 l.y. from Earth, is announced to have a planet that might be habitable by humans. To date there are 491 planets verified and many awaiting that status:
