Thanks a lot for your help. I got GD to work by limiting the support
options. Basically I build it with only JPEG support and that worked quite
well. Now I just have to deal with the little problem of having two Perl
versions on my system.

Tonight, in a desperate bid to free up some space on my hard drive, I went
ahead and created a new directory on my huge unused /u2 partition called
bin. Then I copied everything from /bin to /u2/bin. Then I deleted /bin
and created a symbolic link from /bin - /u2/bin.
Then I rebooted.
Have you looked for and deleted all core dumps?
