I will check that. All I can say at this point is that I ran install from the cd and let it do its thing automatically

This causes a loop in the file system that can result in the web-gui falling back to the default lighttpd page. An issue was opened in Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.vyatta.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2291 That describes the problem in more details. Is it possible that your system was installed this way? Running a 'df' from the bash shell will display the Vyatta directories and the partitions they were installed on.
