Okie dokes,
I can definitely sympathise with Peter's situation, and after finally
getting it all working last night, I can put it down to these things:
1) Windows XP sharing is weird. There is a new method of enabling
sharing, so to go back to the old method (as seen in Win2k and
Win98/ME) p
OK, after much research I'm still at a loss on what to buy! Some
Macintosh specific recommendations are warranted!

I actually got a pleasant surprise when I discovered that I could synch my
Palm Vx with PD under 10.2 using IR on a TiPB - it never worked with any
other version of OS X. I haven't tried USB though and it sounds like you
are probably trying over USB.
