The CD may be one of the copy protected audio CDs. This has happened to me
with one of these but my drive still reads everything else.

I believe that CD and DVD work use different wavelengths - dvd using a shorter
wavelength to help get the higher capacity. To implement this dual lasers are
probably being used. So perhaps the CD laser has died, but the DVD laser is
still working fine?
