Thanks for the info from the gurus.yes it was formatted for
MSdos. I have saved all the info and will reformat the HD tomorrow.
It will be interesting to see if the damaged files are permanently
damaged, but I do have most of them on CD anyway.

It's probably formatted as FAT32 (Windows File System). Open Disk Utility
and check it out. You may have to re-format it as HFS+ .

I have transferred lots of photographs to an external HD (Lacie
250gb). When transferring I get messages saying that some names are
too long. Also on trying to open photos from the Lacie HD messages
tell me that the file is damaged and possibly truncated. Some pics
show truncations. I do

I knew the maths was there but once again I am dumbed by the
eloquence of WAMuggers in their explanations.
