I have now rebooted both the modem and the Airport Extreme - but with the
same result - the iMac and iPad connect fine - the iphone sees the network
but gives me a "incorrect password" dialogue

A strange problem here.

Thanks for your efforts Geoff, but I did get the printer working which
saved me a lot of workaround stuff transferring data from his PPC 5200CD.
If he has any more problems I will give him a G3 iMac slot loader and a
matching printer and he can transfer his data on floppies to the iMac.
