Apple TV, iMac and Sound Preferences Update on this issue.
I left Apple TV on and shut down my iMac. On starting up again, the Sound
preferences did not reveal the internal speakers only Apple TV.
I disconnected Apple TV , but that did not change the preferences.
I did a restart and once again

On your iMac - System Preferences Sound Output - do you see Internal
Speakers, Apple TV and AirPort Express (if ATV is connected via WiFi)?
