Select camera

I have a Sony mini DV video camera connected by firewire. This is fine for importing to iMovie and the like. In other situations, like QT Pro, I can not select it in preference to the iSight camera. Is there a preference setting for this? The Sony does not appear in the Devices list, I sus

My sons MBP (2012 Mavericks) has decided tonight it wont boot up. When starting it, the Apple logo comes up with the grey screen and the circulating little bar thing on regular start up. The difference is there is a progress bar at the bottom centre of screen which slowly progresses and it gets
