Are you sure the update downloaded or is it just showing in Software Update? Settings > General - Software Update should show there is an update available iOS 8.4 & the file size 164MB - (click on 'More Info' to find out details) But to download and Install the update iOS 8.4 you would need to

Ronni, I've checked settings as suggested. Automatic downloads were not enabled, but despite that the iOS update was automatically downloaded last night, but not installed. That must mean that I have to remain vigilant if I do not want the update to operate. If I'm right, I am not impressed.
