Mac Trash Problem

Hi all, I recently had to format my ext. hard drive so I copied all my files on my mac book pro while I formatted the ext hdd. Now, post-formatting, I go to securely empty my trash on my mac book and it prepares to delete but just stops and closes the window without deleting a thing... Morga
