For those who are feeling a bit adventurous the firmware updates from <http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/> worked for me. I'd follow the directions pretty carefully, eg.restarting without extensions etc.. and there was a very long wait at the end where it looked like the trusty imac had frozen... but I resisted the urge to reset, which according to the documentation would have rendered my dvd-rom useless, and eventually the "you're computer is not ruined, you can breathe again" dialogue box came up.
