What are his settings in System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse and
Trackpad?
You can set the speed of the double click to be much slower.

I tried your suggestion but the problem remains. He can't open any file
anywhere (in our outside a program) with a mouse or The only way to open is
to use keyboard shortcuts or File>>Open or in the case of Calendar
Edit>>Event.
It is in the weird category. Not impossible of course, just
Open Disk Utility (Applications / Utilities) on your Mac.
Select your disk from the left menu and then click First Aid and then click
Run.
This will fix volume errors.
