Thanks. I eventually solved the problem by booting up from an OS 9 disk that had Retrospect Express on it and recreated the snapshot and was then able to restore the files. My enthusiasm for Retrospect has lessened somewhat and I wonder whether burning a CD or using an external hard drive as
