Greetings,

On the 14th October 2002 HP released revision 4.6.3 of the driver for its
all-in-one Officejet G85 for Mac OS 9.1 to 9.2.2 and OSX 10.1 to 10.2. Size
was 39.41 mb.

Two weeks later, on the 28th October 2002 HP released what its webpage
describes as HP Officejet G series software/driver revision 5.5.6, size
46.27 mb.

As long suffering readers may recall at times I was quite vocal about the
lack of software for the HP G85, and, anxious to get the machine working at
something approaching a reasonable fraction of the advertised performance
capability, I dutifully downloaded revision 4.6.3 and used the printer.
Flattered but somewhat mystified as to why HP would release another revision
within two weeks, I trustingly downloaded revision 5.5.6. I was a bit
confused to see that the .img opened up to a thing described as "hp
officejet 6100 installer", so I rang HP and was told that the driver for my
Mac is in fact what appears from the web page to be the superseded revision
4.6.3.

Both revisions are listed on the HP webpage as being for Max OSX.

Can anyone offer any explanation why HP acts in this way? It looks as if
I've wasted 36 minutes in downloading revision 5.5.6 and will have to spend
another 30 odd minutes downloading revision 4.6.3 and spend whatever time it
takes to rid my computer of 5.5.6 before reinstalling 4.6.3. Unless, of
course, 6100 installer is the correct installer for the G85.

Regards,

Michael Hawkins.
