the issue here is signal to noise ratio:

I doubt anyone here would disagree that shay is probably the most active
contributor (in terms of problem solving) to this list, and I'm sure
everyone appreciates his input.. most of from direct experience.

I'm sure everyone can also appreciate the amount of time he spends doing
this... that said, the "noise" (spam, irrelevant anecdotes etc) eats into
this time unnecessarily.. that being the nature of spam. I don't hear anyone
telling shay to "lighten up" in response to his numerous helpful posts each
day.

hard as it may be to believe, many of us get our kicks in places other than
the wamug list (no, really!). I send my humorous emails to people who I know
will not be inconvenienced, or even offended, by them. (that's "my friends"
in shorthand)
