Solution. Thanks Richard.
It appears that I somehow took on the Normal template from one of my
client's documents. By trashing the old one and creating a new Normal both
problems have disappeared.
It has also disappeared when I use Entourage which was linked to Word.

Check to see if you have the autocorrect feature ticked. You'll find it
under "Tools" in the menu bar.
Yasu caused problems both times I used it, and so I abandoned it in favour
of Macjanitor and Disk Utility..Good luck,

Suddenly I am having problems when I type in both MS Word (in MS Office X)
and Entourage.
As I type an alternative word comes up beneath the work I am typing. It
seems to be giving me alternatives as I type. This has just started and to
save my sanity I want to stop it.
