would naturally make sure it's done a backup prior to converting over to IMAP.
Once the new account is created using IMAP, presumably one can restore the
emails from the backup within the old POP3 account?

safety. I assume that can happen under IMAP as Daniel suggests.

You could look at using an IMAP account, rather then POP3. This would cover
what you've mentioned.
This is what I use and I find it works very well. My iPhone, iPad and 2
computers are all set to IMAP. But anything I want to archive is all stored and
