Apple has finally eliminated the old CRT-based eMac and replaced it with a
new cheaper model of iMac only available to Education customers (K-12,
university, TAFE departments, staff or students) at Aus$1,428.90 ($1299 tax
ex).

For that you get:

* 17-inch widescreen LCD
* 1440x900 resolution
* 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor(1)
* 512MB memory (2x256MB SO-DIMMs) (which you¹d really want to increase)
* 80GB Serial ATA hard drive
* 24x Combo Drive (DVD-ROM, CD-RW)
* Intel GMA 950 graphics with 64MB of shared memory

To reach this new lower price point, you go without Bluetooth, no
DVD-burner, no dedicated ATI graphics card, smaller hard disk and no Apple
Remote. However, it does still include the fantastic iLife 06, Airport
Extreme wireless, iSight Video Camera and the dual core Intel Core Duo chip
amongst other things. The previous bottom of the range iMac which does have
all of these extra features is still available at Aus$1,799.

Not bad value at all and with Boot Camp installed and running Windows XP (or
Vista) at full native speed as well, represents a good choice for a
multi-purpose all-in-one lab machine.
