question can I install OS 10.2 and use it , whilst also maintaining use of OS 8.6 (albiet as a separate boot I suppose, not in classic) You might be able to do it if you installed 9 and X on a separate drive and left another drive an 8.6. It would be a bit more difficult to get it to work on
