I've just googled the problem and it appears that the latest 10.6.8 security update has Gummed up the Works! I've got the original Install discs (10.6.4) that came with the iMac (27 3.2GHz Intel Core i3). Should I do a reinstall and avoid updates? -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List

Generally only if you installed 10.6.8 the first one, they released 10.6.8 v1.1 Security update. If you check Software Update does it show again as another Security Update? Or try downloading from here:- http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1489?viewlocale=en_USlocale=en_US I'd try reinstalling that
