I was in the process of typing out a long email reply, as I had come to the
conclusion that you do not have iCloud setup correctly on your Mac and your
iPad & iPhone (if you have one).

Well, it worked .. phew
I deleted the calendars on the desktop and then sync'ed the iPad and I got all
my correct data back.
I have arranged with Daniel for a visit to sort out my iCloud issues.

How have you setup iCloud on your Mac and on all your Devices to sync using
iCloud?
On your Mac in System Preferences > iCloud you should have selected the same
items as in iCloud settings on your iPad.
To keep Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, & Notes in Sync with your Mac & iOS

Thanks Ronni, that worked a treat and I was able to connect the iPad without it
updating the iPad with the current desktop iCal.
May I ask how to update the desktop from the iPad rather than vica versa?
It all seems designed to do it one way only... in the Advanced section of Info
in the iTunes
Hi Brett,
If you are syncing “Mail, Contacts & Calendars" in iCloud … DON’T sync these
also in iTunes.
To STOP your iPad from syncing in iTunes when you connect it:
1. While connecting the iPad to the computer on a Mac.
Hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys together.
