Hi Rod,
You don't mention if you're using FireWire 800 or 400. But either
way...your speeds seem to be 20 Mb/sec for FireWire and 30 Mb/sec for
USB. These seem slow to me, I would have expected at least 30 Mb/sec
for FireWire, or more likely 50 Mb/sec. Maybe there is some other

Hi Blitto,
I agree with Daniel, Firewire 800 / 400 is faster than USB. I've never found
USB to be faster than FW for transferring Video or large amounts of data.
One explanation I do have. You say the Firewire Drive was almost full, the USB
was not.
The fuller a hard drive gets, it will slow do
I tried some more tests:Copy 1.95 GB movieTo Old FW drive and to newish FW drive - both came in about 1 min 42 secsTo new USB drive tested twice - around 60 secondsBlittoOn 19/07/2010, at 10:00 AM, Daniel Kerr wrote:Thanks RodInteresting,..As Ruben said, wonder if it (the Firewire) was using a 5400
Thanks Rod
Interesting,..
As Ruben said, wonder if it (the Firewire) was using a 5400rpm Hard Drive
and the USB one using a 7200rpm Hard Drive.
Normally would be faster with Firewire.
Interesting to see though.
Kind Regards
Daniel

Hi DanielThe folder was a Final Cut project including all the raw footage, scratch disk etc.It was copied from an 18 month old macbook pro internal drive in both cases. The FW drive was quite old, maybe 5? yrs and almost full. The USB drive was brand new.cheersRodOn 18/07/2010, at 9:26 PM, Daniel Ker
My best guess would be that the actual external hard drive used for the
firewire was slower than the one used by the usb.

Some interesting figuresI copied a 23 GB folder to a USB Drive and then to a Firewire Drive. The FW drive is several years old, the USB is new (don't know if that makes a difference)Firewire was slower.Firewire = 22 minUSB = 12 minBlitto
