Dear WAMUGgers

Here's a tricky one, maybe for our educational fraternity.

WA DET uses Oracle Messenger as its instant messenging client. It is downloaded and installed into Windows via the DET portal. However there is no Mac version, so although I can access the portal for email and all the associated weblinks, including Syllabus, First Steps etc, Messenger is off limits on the Mac unless I open Windows in VMWare Fusion to run it (which I am able to do on the MacBook) - sort of overkill really for this task.

The Oracle website has details of how to set up iChat in Tiger (I'm using Leopard) using Jabber to access Oracle Messenger. However I haven't been successful in getting it to work. I suspect the DET server is suspicious and won't let me in, or that it excludes Jabber, as a security measure, or that port configs are wrong.

See http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/cs/user_info/ortc/messenger_index.html#005019 and text below.

I've even tried Wine and CrossOver but they don't seem to support the app, and my version of Wine doesn't seem very user friendly!

Has anyone had any success doing this, or similar?

Specific DET details for connection, read from my Windows version, include:

Auto Config for RTC Connection
Server: conference.det.wa.edu.au
Port: 80
Connection: http

I've also tried Adium but that doesn't work either. http://www.adiumx.com/
From Oracle FAQ:

If you'd like to use iChat to chat with Oracle Messenger users, make sure you have Mac OS X Tiger installed on your computer.

To set up iChat to connect to the Oracle Messenger service:

        • Open iChat.
        • From the iChat menu, select Preferences.
        • Click Accounts at the top of the dialog box.
        • Click the + button to add a new account.
        • Select Jabber Account from the Account Type menu.
        • Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:
• Jabber ID: Your Oracle Messenger user name in the form usern...@im- domain (for example, john.sm...@mycompany.com). • Password: Your single sign-on password for Oracle Real-Time Collaboration. • Server: The host name of the machine serving Oracle Messenger. If you don't know the Oracle Messenger server's host name, ask your system administrator.
        • Click Add.
Once you connect to the Oracle Messenger service using iChat, you will see your Oracle Messenger contact list. If you do not have a contact list set up, you can add contacts in iChat.

Many thanks
