Volume keyboard controls don't work

Dear WAMUGers yesterday i plugged into a projector and speakers to do a short presentation. Now i find my volume up/dpwn controls no longer work. I can adjust volume by going to the System Prefs, but not on my keyboard volume controls. Please - any ideas here? ta blitto 10.8.2 macbook air
